Managing and controlling oily skin does not stop in a week or a month but you have to make it your regular skincare habit. You don`t always have to purchase to find the best skincare products for oily skin.
Oily skin makes the skin feel sticky and appears as if it has been drizzled with oil. Even though oily, your skin may be dry at the same time.
Hence this may be a challenge as you put an effort when using makeup. There are items you already have at home or will cost very little but will surely help you reduce oily face.
We`re going to look at some home remedies that will reduce that shine. You need the oil on your skin to keep it soft and maintain moisture.
But, you do not need too much of it that it makes your skin feel greasy and unclean(you know the feeling)? so let`s see different ways on how to get rid of oily face.
Can You Get Rid Of Oily Face From Home
The perfect solution to get rid of that pesky shine is right at home. All it takes is some gentle rubbing and washing, or better yet exfoliation! You’ll be oil-free before the day’s end if done properly so try these three methods for best results:
But let`s check these methods in detail and how they work.
Where This Oil Comes From
This oil that makes the skin sticky is secreted by the sebaceous glands, which are everywhere in the body except at the palms and soles of the feet.
The face has a greater concentration of sebaceous glands than any other body part.
These glands can either open directly on the surface of the skin or have a connection to the hair follicle.
The glands can at times produce much oil which blocks the pores leading to acne.
Though this oil is required to keep your skin healthy and also protected from infections, much of it can be yucky. Unfortunately lacking it would also make your skin dry and age faster.
The best thing to do is to find a way that can help in reducing the amount of oil that is being secreted.
What causes oily skin on the face
The sebaceous glands are under the control of hormones. This is the reason why teens get acne as their hormones fluctuate. Therefore excess oil is secreted.
This hormonal imbalance can also occur at adulthood due to stress, genetics, diet, and environmental factors.
Age can increase oil in your skin, that?s why you see many teens with oily skin, but this does not mean it will just disappear as you get older, even in your 30s, you can still have oily skin.
Another reason the skin gets oils is using the wrong skin care products, but we`ll get to that later in the post.
How to Wash Oily Face
This may seem obvious but it has been proven that many people with oily skin do not wash their faces daily. Remember that washing the skin to remove the oil does not stop the oil glands from secreting more.
You can stop using a store-bought face wash and wash your face with plain water. This in combination with microdermabrasion that I mentioned in an earlier post here. ( I know this post is about homemade skincare products).
Though not everyone would prefer this. If in high need of a face wash, I would prefer you to use a homemade face wash when washing your face. Examples are given below.
Plain honey to get rid of oily skin
For acne, honey is great when used as a mask or a face wash. It’s vital that the honey you use contains its healthy bacteria so as to be effective.
After applying it on your face, leave it for 15 minutes then wash. The honey may be so sticky so it may be preferable if you mix it with a little water before applying it on your face.
Raw honey is expensive than other kinds of honey, but it’s relatively inexpensive compared to other skin cosmetics for your face.
Ensure that you wash off any honey from your face before you go to bed, it attracts dust you sure don`t want honey stickiness on your pillows.
Don’t use this if you have allergic reactions to bee products. Check more on bee products allergies here.
This raw honey helps in balancing the bacteria on your skin hence has been studied as an anti-bacterial and anti-acne product. Check top rated honey here.
DIY face wash with honey
You can use the same honey to make a face wash, this is simple and there is no chance of anything going wrong
- ½ cup of honey
- ¼ cup of water
- 1 teaspoon avocado oil
- 10 drops of tea tree oil
Mix all and keep in a glass jar. Shake it well before using and only apply a small amount all over your face, massage gently as you`d when washing your face, then wash.Oatmeal Face Wash
Let`s be fair, this is not for everyone as it can get messy.
Grind oatmeal and keep it in a jar. When using, mix one tablespoon of the ground oatmeal in 2 tablespoons of warm water.
Rub it on your face and wash it with warm water. Oats are good as they provide relief from itchy skin. (More on this here).
DIY Face Mask For Oily Skin
- Honey face mask
To use honey for your face mix it with other ingredients to create a soothing face mask treatment.
A mixture of raw honey and cinnamon is the best. Mix 3 parts of honey and 1 part of freshly ground cinnamon and warm the mixture in a microwave(please make sure it`s not too hot for your skin).
Apply it to your skin then rinse with warm water after 8-10 minutes.
- Clay mask
The best clay for acne prone oily skin is Bentonite clay. It controls the overproduction of sebum and unclogs the pores. It even shrinks the pores hence reducing the appearance of scars on your face.I already wrote an indepth review of Bentonite Clay and the benefits here if you missed it.
There is more DIY face mask for oily skin but to keep this post shorter, I`ll not cover them all here. Remember it takes more than 1 try to prevent oily face, unlike shop-bought products, DIY may take time for you to see results.
Toners for oily skins
Most of the toners contain alcohol which makes the skin drier. Because of this, I don’t see the need for any.
But in case you need them you can have a try on these;
Green Tea and Rose Water Toner
This can be made by adding equal quantities of rose water and green tea in a bottle then keeping them in a refrigerator.
Mint Toner
You can make this by grinding mint leaves and straining the mix. Then dilute it till it is transparent and store it in a bottle use it daily to reduce oily face.
Ice Cube
Ice cube has the same effect as a toner. This is simpler because you only have to rub it all over your face.
Apple Cider Vinegar Toner
I must admit I find this smells nasty and when looking for the best skin care products for oily skin be it DIY or otherwise. This for me is a no-no.
Apple cider vinegar contains some organic acid which kills the bacteria that causes acne. It can be made by fermenting apple cider or unfiltered juice from pressed apples. Due to high acidity, apple cider vinegar should be diluted before it’s applied to the skin. Steps to follow when making it
- Mix one part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water.
- Clean your face.
- Use a cotton ball to gently apply the mixture to the skin.
- Leave it for 5-20 seconds and rinse with water. Do this 1-2 times a day.
Always use moisturizer because your skin needs the maximum moisture it can. A moisturizer can either be used during the day or at night.
You also need to use a good sunscreen because acne-prone skin needs to be protected from the sun. Remembering this every time you are out in the sun.
For oily skin a gel-based sunscreen is great or you can even try a moisturizer containing SPF 50.
Also improve on your diet. Avoid sugar and dairy in your diet so as to make your skin less oily. Do not cut oil from your diet as it does not cause the skin to be oily.
And finally, Moisturize.
Now, this post is not about moisturizing, there are other posts here on that but I felt we`ll cover this a bit because I`ve heard several mixed opinions on a question.
“Should you moisturize if you have oily skin?”
The answer is yes, If you have oily skin, then it’s best to moisturize. Moisturizer will keep the moisture in your cells and help absorb excess oil from pores that can lead to breakouts if not properly handled with care!
A good rule-of-thumb for all types of skins is: “less is more.” A little goes a long way when applying any type of lotion or cream; start small so as not to apply extra product onto problematic areas.
Is moisturizing oily skin a good idea or bad?
The reason for this question is that it can be difficult to find the right product without having any experience with any moisturizer for oily skin.
However, if your complexion has been acting up lately and you want some help in getting back on track then consider using something like aloevera oil as an ingredient!
It will not only make things smoother but also get rid of excess sebum production by drying out clogged pores effectively- all while being safe enough under makeup.
What is the best moisturizer for oily skin?
Dehydrated skin can sometimes produce more oil than necessary as your skin thinks it`s “hungry” thus creating oils to feed.
If your skin is oily, you should look for skin moisturizers that are oil-free and not greasy, this is why it`s recommended to moisturize oily skin to keep your skin hydrated.
